The Swedish school of Atlanta was founded in 1994. Over the years the school has changed in many ways, but the same goal remains: to provide Swedish children, living in Atlanta, the opportunity to keep their Swedish language alive by meeting other Swedish-speaking children and by experiencing Swedish traditions together. The instruction aims to improve the children’s speaking, reading, and writing abilities, as well as to introduce them to Swedish songs, geography, and literature.
We meet every other Sunday afternoon at the Atlanta International School in Buckhead. See their website for directions. The hours are 1:30pm-4:30pm.
Tuition per semester is:
- All classes $200
In order to participate, the children must have a good understanding of the Swedish language, and Swedish should be a “living” language at home. All instruction is in Swedish.
During the year, we celebrate various Swedish traditions. In fall we try to get out in the woods and learn about nature, at Christmas times we attend SWEA‘s Christmas market and there we do Swedish crafts as well a Lucia procession. During Easter we have the traditions of doing crafts and our friendly Easter Witch comes with Easter eggs filled with candy for all the children. We have a big end-of-school-year celebration with traditional songs.
